Equality and Diversity Conferences 2011-2012

Women Members: Friday 4 November 2011

The theme of this year’s women members’ conference is Defending women’s education. A panel of speakers, including Estelle Hart from NUS and Kat Banyard from UK Feminista, will discuss how we campaign to defend women’s education in a time of austerity. There will be workshops on multiculturalism and feminism, women’s security in retirement and women’s role in the union: developing women’s activism.  The conference will also debate and vote on motions from branches and regions, as well as elect members to the women members’ standing committee. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other UCU women members, form links and to discuss key issues affecting women members in particular.

Black Members: Friday 11 November 2011

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘black communities/black educators fight back’

At a time when black workers are increasingly in the firing line in the wake of public sector cuts and attacks on multiculturalism the conference is an opportunity for UCU’s black members to come together, share experiences and plan a way forward.’

The speakers confirmed for the conference this year are Professor Aneez Ismail and Bonnie Greer. There will also be a workshop session from Show Racism the Red Card.

Disabled Members: Friday 25 November 2011

This conference It is a great opportunity to influence and be part of the UCU’s work on disability issues. This year we have two guest speakers. Richard Reiser who is co-ordinator of Disability History Month and Rupy Kaur who is the Disability Officer for the National Union of Students.  The main priority of the UCU National Disabled Members Committee is campaigning against the cuts and challenging the impact it is having on disabled people at work and in their communities. We have asked both speakers to give their perspectives on this issue which will be followed by discussing what action we should be taking in UCU.

In the afternoon there will be workshops. The workshops will cover

  • Mental health in the workplace
  • The implications of disclosing a disability at work (with the aim of producing guidance)
  • Challenges facing members with hidden disabilities

The day will end with a plenary on being active in the union. An interactive session on how members’ activity increases the effectiveness of the union and how to get disabled members issues discussed at branch, regional and national level.

The members of the national committee are keen to make the conference as accessible as possible so are volunteering to act as buddies to any delegate who is, for example, attending for the first time or who wants more information about some of the procedural issues that take place at the conference.  Please let Helen or James know if you are interested in having a buddy.
